Thursday, 07.29.10: Active Recovery

<< Return to Main Blog

Warm Up:  ROM drills

End-urability:  Rucksack Hump or Mountain Hike.  Medium distance (1-2 hours, 4 - 8 miles, 30# load)

Notes:  Equipment:  Ruck.  Active Recovery is about moving your body using a Long-Slow-Distance mode and having fun.  It is also a great opportunity to get out of the artificial environment of the gym and practice a sport, take a hike, etc.  Practicing your internal awareness skills of breath control, meditation and mindfulness are recommended and easier to do while alone on a trek, or wave.  The WOD is merely a recommendation for Active Recovery - do whatever floats your boat.

Comments, suggestions and pictures are welcome  - train hard and safe, and most of all have fun.  -- Mark Divine, Head Coach

1. I'm lucky enough to live right below a small mountain. I usually take different trails around it for my Thursday AR days. Have fun guys!

2. Completed a 3-mile (4500m) timed swim this morning using combat side stroke (no fins) in a 50m pool. Took me 1:19.2 (1 mile splits- 26:25, 26:22, and 26:15); that pace is sub 8 mins per 500 yds for 3 miles.

To quote David Goggins, "I decided to do ultras and extreme endurance events to test my soul."

After mile 1, all i thought about was David Goggins and how hard he pushes himself.

3. If I ever go on a treasure hunt for a sunken Spanish galleon, I'm calling you Rich.

4. Good deal bro. We can split 50/50-- but can we avoid snakes and alligators. Im seriously freaked out by those two animals.

I havent quite mastered the underwater 50m swim- the underwater flip at the beginning costs me too much air. Next time, grr...

5. Hey Rich, I could barely do 25 meters with a push off during my own practice sessions (even blacked out once). But when it was time to pass or fail I did it easily and felt like I could have done a 75. The 50m underwater is the most overrated evolution hands down. You probably don't need these words of encouragement but I'm just putting this out for all the people sweating over the 50m underwater.

6. Thanks roper- its always nice to hear the success stories.

But I always try to prepare to the point of being over prepared.

7. Nah, no gators or snakes where we would dive. And actually those do not bother me. We're talking open water where a fish like you could make us some money!

P.S. Scourge, you suck. You get to live next to a mountain.

8. question about a workout from a previous day. What are leg levers?
Comment by Jonathan Richardson — July 29, 2010 at 4:34pm
9. @ J. Richardson,

Both legs together, on your back, hands under your butt...

Raise your legs up and down while keeping them together. Do a youtube video search if that doesn't help.
