I guess it depends on the scenario (PST, Metcon, Skill Work) as to how people will perform their pushups.

Not including Skill Work, if a push-up is done without achieving full ROM then I don't consider it a proper push-up. It would be like counting a pull-up where the chest didn't touch the bar. When taking PSTs I often will get a small bruise on my sternum where I slam into the fist that is placed beneath it.

another thing I forgot to mention: a very popular pushup standard is elbows at 90 degrees or upper arm parallel to the deck, regardless of where the chest is, which is also considered full ROM. so that's why I emphasize "CTD" to distinguish my pushups

to differentiate between those who do them improperly, in an attempt to motivate/educate them on proper form. also when we have to do a crap ton of pushups, like 1000, I highly doubt people are doing every one of them chest to deck. or even in WODs like barbara, angie, cindy, etc, when ppl are going for the fastest time possible not all pushups are perfect form, simply cause ppl are striving for speed. you seen chris spealler do some of the calisthenic-based WODs? not even he goes chest to deck on every rep.

btw-did you see how the judges made them do pushups at the CF Games? letting your hands off the deck after each rep? that was cool, I think I'll try that next time.

I guess the difference is that the main reason I'm doing push-ups is not for sport or to get the fastest time possible. I'm doing them to be fitter. I want to be strong in the full ROM, not the half-assed full ROM. When training with the candidates in my zone I often eventually fall behind with pushes because I always go CTD, but that doesn't bother me because I want to be confident that I have that strength if I get stuck in a life-or-death situation.

This all might (probably) will change when I get to BUD/S and have instructors using push-ups to beat the hell out of me and all I want to do is get them done and not die.

I think the hands-off policy was a great idea for the games, but I don't think its necessary for regular training.

I can't bring myself to do pushups other than CTD, for reasons I won't get into, but I get why some people will do a shallow pushup if they just want to smoke a metcon.

@Franco, you get bruises on your sternum during PST pushups? You must be falling on that fist pretty damn hard.

I do drop pretty hard. I don't want to waste energy "looking" for the fist. Plus it's hitting the same spot 80+ times.

Well it makes sense if you're doing a PST, you don't want to waste energy on negatives.

This was my first time trying a SF WOD

Before work:
500m Swim broken into 100m intervals. This was all I had time for

WU: Stretch. Pushups 50. Wall Ball - didn't start the clock. Stopped at 75

Strength: 225x8, 275x6, 285x4, 295x3, 305x2 (broken), 315x1

Stamina: Scaled down to 225x3. 15" jump to the curb. Jingle Jangle

WC: Scaled back to 95# and 200m. I was spent by this time, and only did two rounds. I felt like a Weenie for quitting, but I was okay with what I accomplished, and know I have a long way to go. The other down side is that it took me waaay to long to get going between events. There was a lot of set up time with moving the weights, and looking for areas to run, which took a lot of time, but gave me more than what I needed on recovery. My next goal is to work on scaling the workout back so I can at least finish.

WU: 105 pushups. Didn't have anywhere do the wall balls today so I did thrusters with a 25lb plate. 50 reps.

I'm still trying to get in the habit of going chest to deck/maintain good form. For future reference, when there is a portion that says: "Perform as many -blank- as possible in 2:00", is that without dropping to ground, or say if we're doing pull-ups, without dropping from the bar?

Strength: 225 - 245 - 265 - 275 - 295 - 325 Pr by 10# :]

Stamina: Rx'd with 285# for Deadlifts

WC: 47 minutes. That was a killer..Still hurting from the past couple days. Subbed the 400m runs with rows.

Durability: Rx'd. Both sets unbroken.
